THE STORY

See the city differently.

Portland's motto means 'I shall rise again'—and its streets make the point. This history-rich downtown loop explores the city's devastating fires, remarkable surviving structures, and the generations of rebuilding that followed.

✳

A city of survivors

Among the stories we’re developing: the Wadsworth–Longfellow House, one of the peninsula’s earliest surviving structures, and the history preserved in the Abyssinian Meeting House.

✳

Look up

From the monumental U.S. Custom House to contemporary towers such as The Casco, we’ll talk about what Portland’s buildings reveal about its changing ambitions.

✳

A living history

This isn’t just a tour about what happened long ago. We’ll connect old Portland to the city you see today, with its arguments, possibilities, and contradictions.
